Our world has always been a turbulent place for people who aren’t in a position of “power”. Power, of course, is a construct. But the perception associated with it is what results in true authority. Influence. Dominance. Control. The voice that matters.
Those who are not the ilk of or held in regard by the power-wielding often pay the price in their everyday existence. Be it because of their race, religion, creed, sexual orientation, political affiliation or gender. As ridiculous as it is to marginalize people for who they are, how our world’s patriarchy has historically treated women –the most significant & arguably most powerful side of humankind –is the one that I feel is the most distasteful. I won’t get into the long, painful history of her-story (I wouldn’t presume to be qualified enough to do so anyway). It’s already well documented throughout our nations, through societal expectations & in the business world.
Never more evident than in Hollywood.
I was elated when I learned last week that all but one Fox pilot greenlit for the coming season is written by women. This is amazing. Also a first, I suspect, for any of the major networks. It’s a triumph that deserves to be celebrated. What’s sad is it’s taken this long & incites a feeling of accomplishment. What I mean by that is this should have always been the norm. That it shouldn’t even have occurred to us as a problem in the first place.
I’m proud of the push for representation we’re witnessing. I’m proud to be a part of it & honored to be living in a time when we can see palpable change happening. For all the efforts of Me Too, cancel culture, Her Story & the other relatable movements occurring & yet to emerge, I say thank you for pushing to no longer accept the status quo as the status quo.
Today we celebrate International Women’s Day. But instead, let’s strive to celebrate what it means –the importance women play in our world, their impact & presence at every level of our existence –every day.
Here’s to you, ladies!
